December Break 2010 Robotics & C Programming Class

The Boston Public Schools' Office of Instructional & Information Technology's TechBoston unit is teaming up again with Machine Science to offer middle and high school students a chance to engage in hands-on engineering and robotics activities.

Students will learn how to use digital/analog sensors and the C programming language to control their own digital electronics and robotics technology. This year's December vacation break training will take place on Tuesday, December 28th and Wednesday, December 29th from 8:30 AM to 3PM on the fourth floor of Madison Park Technical Vocational High School in Roxbury.

There is NO COST for a student to participate, but pre-registration is required because space is limited. Students must pre-register online at http://bit.ly/f9TUS5 and return completed parent permission form either via email to eesteves@techboston.org or upon arrival on December 28th.

PRIMES after-school HS research program (Program for Research In Mathematics, Engineering, & Science)

The MIT Mathematics Department is offering a new after-school research program for high school students from Greater Boston, called PRIMES: Program for Research In Mathematics, Engineering, and Science.

PRIMES connects high school students with MIT faculty and graduate students to work on advanced research projects in mathematics or computational biology.

Program participants come weekly to MIT campus to meet with their mentors, audit lectures, and visit MIT labs. The Program is free, and there is no application fee. Girls, minorities, and students from underprivileged groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

The application deadline for the 2011 program cycle is December 15, 2010.

You will be able to:
  • work with MIT researchers on exciting unsolved problems in
  • mathematics or computational biology for one year
  • submit your project to science competitions
  • meet other students who love math
  • attend lectures in math and science
  • visit MIT research labs
You will learn:
  • a lot of cool new math
  • how to use computers to do math research
  • how to look for patterns, form and test conjectures, and prove theorems
  • how to write a research paper and give a talk
For further information, see http://web.mit.edu/primes

This is a wonderful opportunity for talented students to build a solid foundation for a future
career in mathematics, science, or engineering.

Sponsored by the MIT Mathematics Department and the MIT Physical Science-Oncology Center
