BPS Technology Showcase

The Office of Instructional and Information Technology (OIIT) invites you to attend a full day of technology events! On Saturday, June 5, 2010, the BPS Technology Showcase Day will feature 3 events at Wentworth Institute of Technology to highlight the district's efforts to make technology more accessible to students, families, and teachers. Please join us in celebrating the following initiatives:

21st Century Leadership Cadre Showcase: The day will kick-off in the morning with the 21st Century Leadership Cadre Showcase from 8:30-11:00 in Beatty Hall, Lower Level. The showcase will serve as an opportunity for schools to share their learning and how technology training has impacted their work. Technology Goes Home (TGH) Graduation: The annual TGH Graduation Ceremony will occur from 1:00 to 3:00 in Tansey Gym. Certificates will be given to teachers to pass out and families will have an opportunity to celebrate together.

Robotics Olympics: TechBoston’s Robotics Olympics will also take place in Beatty Hall, Upper Level, from 12:00 to 4:00, as more than 150 BPS students compete in the annual event showcasing engineering designs from students in all grades.

The Fidelity FutureStage program for high school students:

Imagine your students performing on stage at a Boston Pops concert at Symphony Hall. Through Fidelity FutureStage- an arts education program created by Fidelity Investments - it could happen! Boston and Cambridge public high school musicians/vocalists can compete for a chance to perform on stage at a Boston Pops concert at Symphony Hall on May 26, 2010.

The Boston Pops and Fidelity FutureStage are working with First Night to find talented high school musicians and vocalists to take part in the second annual Fidelity FutureStage Music Competition 2010. Up to four instrumental and/or vocal acts will be selected to perform live on stage with the Boston Pops and conductor Keith Lockhart. Please visit www.futurestage.com for more information.

Machine Science Digital Electronics every Saturday in Roxbury

Machine Science Digital Electronics:

Every Saturday, students will have the opportunity to build and program their own electronic devices through the Machine Science Digital Electronics. Learn to make sounds from a speaker, control light-emitting diodes (LEDs), display text on an LCD screen, keep track of time and date electronically, gather input from an infrared remote control, and use digital and analog sensors. Build your own GPS, MP3, and robotics devices using the C programming language and learn a variety of programming concepts, including loops, conditional statements, and variables.

When: Saturdays starting January 16th from 11 AM - 2 PM through May 2010

December Break Training: C Programming & Digital Electronics

TechBoston and Machine Science are teaming up again during the December Recess to offer Boston high school students a chance to engage in hands-on engineering activities.

This 3-day course will give students the chance to build and program their own electronic devices including the chance to learn and explore the concepts behind how the following components work: button switches, light emitting diodes (LEDs), liquid crystal displays (LCDs), electronic speakers, digital timers, infrared remote controls, and infrared sensors

Students will write computer programs to control these devices, using the C programming language. A variety of programming concepts will be taught, including loop structures, conditional statements, and variables. If time allows, projects may also involve GPS, MP3, and robotics technology.

The mini-course will be held Monday through Wednesday, December 28th to 30th, from 8:30 AM to 3PM at Madison Park. There is no cost for a student to participate, but pre-registration is required as space is limited. A Day of Career Exploration for High School Girls

Time: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Participants will have the opportunity to:

• Start the day at Boston University, visit Wentworth, Harvard or Simmons and end program with an Omni show at the Museum of Science
• Participate in hands-on science activities led by professionals
• Eat Lunch and Interact with women working in SET fields
• Learn about cutting-edge research that will change the world
• Find out how to prepare for careers in Science, Engineering & Technology fields

Youth CAN Global Climate Change Summit for Students and Educators (Sat, 5/9 @ MIT

Please join Boston Latin School for its 3rd Annual Youth CAN Global Climate Change Summit for Students and Educators on Saturday, May 9th at MIT. Learn what each of us can do about climate change. WHERE: MIT Stata Center (Building 32), 32 Vassar Street, Cambridge

DETAILS: Organized by students in Boston Latin School's Youth Climate Action Network (Youth CAN), the 2008 summit will bring together students and teachers from all over the area for an exciting day of speakers, workshops and activities on topics ranging from environmental law, energy, sustainable living, the science of climate change, and more.

The Summit's purpose is to inform about global warming; foster student activism and leadership; develop a network that will work together to take action about climate change; and form a coalition of youth and educators to promote climate change education. Over 225 students attended the 2007 Summit from 47 different schools.

Mayor Thomas Menino will open the day, followed by MIT President, Susan Hockfield, and a keynote address from Congressman Edward Markey. Additionally, in partnership with the National Wildlife Federation, Youth CAN will award ten $1,000 climate action grants to youth groups who apply at the summit.

ASM Materials Camp

4th Annual ASM Materials Camp

VISION: A one day program to excite and encourage young people to pursue careers in materials science and/or applied science and engineering disciplines.

WHEN: Monday May 11, 2009 8:30-3:30

WHO: The camp is open to HIGH SCHOOL Sophomores and Juniors in the New England region.

WHAT: Students selected for this one day Materials Camp will participate in various learning areas designed to demonstrate the nature of materials and how materials are engineered through processing to perform as desired.

No charge. Please Note: Transportation must be provided by the participants.

Another Teen Night brought to you by the Teen Arts Council. This time you must OBEY. Come check out the hot media making activities--generate propaganda! Get a guided tour through the work of Shepard Fairey's controversial exhibit by a TAC member. Enjoy music and performances by local DJ's and break dancers, including the return of DJ Die Young and the Floorlords. And a special surprise to those who bring their post cards, and those who are ready to OBEY!

Athena Conference @ Harvard

The Athena Conference is an annual conference put on by Harvard women to promote female empowerment among high school women. The conference consists of workshops, speakers, and discussion groups, all of which are free for students!

The event is scheduled for Saturday, December 6th, 2008 from 9 AM to 5 PM (breakfast and lunch are included). This conference provides a unique experience for high school women to interact with successful individuals at the forefront of their fields, as well as Harvard undergraduates who facilitate the workshops.

2008 Girls Get Connected Technology Conference for Middle School Girls

Each year over 150 girls attend the Girls Get Connected Technology Conference and participate in hands-on workshops with women scientists, engineers, and IT professionals. The girls learn about other venues for pursuing their interests in science. This year, find out more about going green at the 2008 Girls Get Connected Technology Conference. You will learn what going green means and the science and technology behind going green.
